Protective hairstyles may cause permanent hairloss

Protective hair styles in the Afro Caribbean community have long been a source of refuge from the supposed dangers of relaxing.

Relaxers have not been strangers to bad publicity as a leading cause of hair loss amongst women.

However afro specialists agree that this is a misconception, and that protective styles could potentially cause more damage than other hairstyles.

  1. With age, men and women have a tendency to lose hair volume and thickness. Statistics, however, shows that men are more affected by “pattern baldness” compared to women. More or less 25% of the male population starts to lose hair by the time they reach the age of 30. Aside from that, roughly two-thirds can either be bald or demonstrate patterns of baldness by 60 years old.
